Urban Transportation in Ankara

City Bus Transportation

In Ankara, public city bus transportation is called “EGO (Elektrik- Gaz- Otobüs)”.  Single or multiple use cards (Ankarakart) are sold at most newspaper kiosks, at EGO booths and at subway stations. Ticket purchase is not possible on EGO buses. Ankarakart can be used both at EGO buses and for the underground transportation.

There are also private buses (“halk otobüsü”) , in which Ankarakart is not accepted. A conductor, seated near the entrance, sells tickets onboard. Both EGO and halk buses have same routes and rates. Please visit http://ego.gov.tr/en for more detail.

Underground Rail System

Ankara has an underground rail system consisting of five lines (1 Ankaray and 4 metro lines). Trains run regularly and stations are clean. You may get single or multiple use Ankarakarts at subway stations.

Intercity Travel

Bus

In Turkey, all intercity buses are privately owned and most companies give service with new, comfortable and technologically well-equipped buses. Online booking is possible almost in all companies.

As Ankara is located in the heart of Anatolia, intercity buses are available to every location in Turkey and are efficient and affordable means of transport. All buses arrive at and depart from Ankara Intercity Bus Terminal (Ankara Şehirlerarası Terminal İşletmeleri- AŞTİ).

You should make a reservation prior to your trip. Seats are closed in advance especially during national and religious holidays.

Train

Turkish State Railways (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları- TCDD) runs trains from the Ankara Garı/ İstasyonu. While train tickets are generally cheaper, trips may take longer and there are not as many routes available as there are with buses. You may get your train ticket at a travel agency, at the main station (Gar) or online at https://ebilet.tcdd.gov.tr/view/eybis/tnmGenel/tcddWebContent.jsf

Students and teachers are offered a reduced rate once they show their student/teacher card.  The main train station is within walking distance; however, it might be difficult to walk with luggage. You may take a taxi from/to ASBU.
